Nagaraja Temple, Nagercoil

Nagaraja Temple, Nagercoil

Nagaraja Temple (Tamil: Naga (serpent) + Raja (king)) is a Hindu temple temple dedicated to the god Nagaraja situated at the heart of Nagercoil. The name for the town Nagercoil originated from this temple. The temple is full of images of snakes. In addition, the gatekeepers of the sanctums are two snakes.
The head priest, who was interviewed in 2009, truly believes that it was originally a Dravidian Tamil Jain temple taken over by Hindus and rechristened as new mythological god by name Naga Raja.
Besides Nagaraja, there are images of Jain Tirthankaras, Mahavira and Parswanatha carved on the pillars of the temple. Total six Jain idols have been found from this temple. Mahavira's and Parsvanatha's idols are still being kept in the temple. The entrance is reminiscent of Chinese architecture of Buddha Vihara.

Nagaraja Temple, from which the town derives its name.

History

It is difficult to ascertain the exact age of the temple. There is no authentic epigraph to aid the historian with its chronology. The mountain Mahendragiri in the Kanyakumari district is referred to as the abode of nagas in the Ramayana of Valmiki. From this, it can be presumed that the origin of naga influence in the area goes back to legendary times.
From the five headed-serpent deity of the temple, the name of this place (town) Nagercoil is derived; gradually its old name, Kottar, has mostly faded. There is a part of town called Kottar, so the old name remains. With in five kilometer there is no human death for snake bite in current dates.

Traditional background

There is a traditional background regarding the origin of Nagaraja temple.
One day when a girl was cutting grass, blood began to spurt from below. She discovered that the sickle had cut into the head of a five-headed serpent. Dazed with fear, the girl fled to the nearest village and reported what she had seen. People in large numbers flocked to the spot and witnessed the miracle with their own eyes. By the joint effort of the villagers, the place was cleared and preserved for the purpose of worship.
They built a small shrine in the locality and worshiped the five-headed serpent. Hearing that the miracle happened at this place, people from other places visited the temple and offered poojas.

A part of the people is satisfied with a Goods harbor; and the rest still fight for a harbor. In every election, be it Legislative Assembly or Parliament, this is sure to catch both the voters' and candidates' attention. But in due course forgotten. Even there is no official version as to what happened to Colachel Harbor. Now a big fishing harbour is under construction.

    2004 Tsunami
The December 2004 Tsunami of the Indian Ocean caused huge devastation and damages. In Colachel, it caused the death of around 500 people. As the land near the coastline is flat and at sea level with no seawall, water traveled inland carving out new streams and estuaries. The waves were reported to be around 5m high and a run up height of 2.6m. Maximum number of casualties happened near the A.V.M. Canal as well as around the open trenches being used by the local coconut fibre industry.[5] Colachel is said to be the last place(southwards) which is affected severely by Tsunami.

Eraniel - Palace photos & Geography

    Geography

Eraniel has a small Palace located near Eraniel Gramam. Moreover Eraniel is an historical place. A lost palace at Eraniel, Eraniel Palace at Marthandom (near Padmanabhapuram) adjoining the stateof Kerala, which has witnessed many adecisive change in the history ofTravancore, is dying. There are no clearrecords that are left out in history about the construction of this palace at Eraniel.Yet, it is presumed that Eraniel palace was constructed during the reign of VanchiMarthanda Varma of the Venad dynasty about five hundred years ago. When Padmanabhapuram(Kalkulam) Palace was completed in 1601 the King Ravi Varma Kulashekhara shifted the seat of power to Padmanabhapuram and Eraniel was maintained as the sub capital. Thehistorical importance of Eraniel palace is also connected with Marthanda Varma Maharaja who is rightly regarded as the maker of modern Travancore. The palace at Eraniel has always glittered in the chronicles of Venad and later Travancore and the ruining sight of the palace evokes, pain in the hearts of those who are devoted lovers of history. The palace compound which spreads over slightly more than three- and- a- half acres only now consists of threeidentifiable parts - the Padippura or the majestic entrance way (now in total ruins), the main palace (also called Kuthiramalika) and third the vasanthamandapam (spring pavilion). The central courtyard of this typicalnalukettu played a major role in the dayto-day life of the occupants, as thisbecame an extension of the interiorfunction into the semi exteriors. Theupper level rooms also have an important relationship with the courtyard. There is a verandah, which runs all along the ground floor of the Kuthiramalika serving as a buffer and circulation space for the building. The Vasanthamalika, which used to be the spring palace of the King, has an Ottakkal Kattil (one stone cot), which is remarkable for its rich stonecarvings. Above this is a wooden pavilionadorned with wooden decorations depicting episodes from Ramayana.
